Margi Rusmore Reaches the Apex

As a student at UC Santa Cruz, Margi Rusmore was the youngest member of the first American Women鈥檚 Himalayan Expedition, which climbed the 10th-highest mountain in the world in November 1978. 鈥淭here was a lot of buzz鈥 around the expedition, Rusmore recalls鈥攁 New York Times headline read, 鈥淗imalayan Scaling Called an Inspiration to Women鈥濃斺渁nd I realized early on that I don't take well to talking about myself. Some people are good at it鈥擨鈥檓 not.鈥

Warren Montag: Activist and Ally

As a student at Palisades High School in 1969, Warren Montag participated in a walkout to protest the Vietnam War. 鈥淚 wasn't consistently politically active at that time, but looking back, I would say that was an important experience,鈥 he says. After the walkout, he and his classmates went to a demonstration at UCLA鈥攁nd while they were on campus, 鈥淭he police attacked the demonstration. I had to run through UCLA, which was like a baptism of fire. It was scary but good.鈥

Stuart Rugg Stays Fired Up

On the morning of May 18, as Oxy seniors and faculty lined up along Bird Road for the Commencement procession up to Hillside Theater, Professor of Kinesiology Stuart Rugg was in his element. 鈥淚 kept teasing my students that it took me 38 years to get my diploma, compared to four for them,鈥 he recalls. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 know the College actually gave emeriti faculty the equivalent of a diploma鈥攚hich was kind of cool.鈥

Peter Dreier Comes Full Circle

Every spring, the Department of Urban and Environmental Policy hands out student awards for community service鈥攁nd this year the department named a new award after Professor Peter Dreier, who retired in June after 32 years at 91爆料. 鈥淭hey wanted to call it the Troublemaker Award,鈥 he says. 鈥淚 said, 鈥楥all it the Public Service and Community Organizing Award or something like that.鈥欌 (Ultimately, the Peter Dreier Community Organizing and Public Service Award was presented to Emma Galbraith 鈥25 on April 30.)

Alexandra Puerto Begins a New Chapter

Alexandra Puerto came to academia later than most. 鈥淚 went to graduate school in my early 30s,鈥 says Puerto, who joined 91爆料 as an adjunct lecturer in Latin American history in 2004 and recently was awarded emerita status as an associate professor of history and Latina/o and Latin American studies. 鈥淚 was at Oxy long enough to retire but still young enough to have a last chapter.鈥

Elmer Griffin: Warrior of Words

Cool Change

Every dorm room tells a story鈥攁nd depending on the temperature, it can be a horror story. Arriving at Chilcott Hall as a first-year from Boston, 鈥淚 thought I鈥檇 landed in hell,鈥 Amy Forest Montgomery 鈥96 recalls. 鈥淥pening those crazy windows only let in more heat.鈥  After calling her uncle, William Sherinyan 鈥58, in tears, 鈥淗e had a massive fan overnighted to me,鈥 she adds. 鈥淚 kept that fan for at least 15 years.鈥
